Nearest Airport to Isle of Skye

Planning a trip to Scotland's most famous island? Here's how to get there from the nearest airports.

Quick Answer

Inverness Airport (INV) is the closest major airport, 80 miles from Skye. However, Glasgow or Edinburgh airports offer far more flight options and are both excellent starting points for a scenic drive to Skye.

The Isle of Skye has no commercial airport. The island is connected to mainland Scotland by the Skye Bridge, so visitors typically drive or take a bus. Choosing the right airport depends on your priorities: convenience, flight availability, or the scenic route.

Getting to Skye

By Car (Recommended)

Rent a car at the airport and drive to Skye. The route from Glasgow via Glencoe and Fort William is one of Scotland's most scenic drives. You'll need a car to explore Skye anyway, so this is the most practical option.

CityLink buses run from Glasgow and Inverness to Portree (Skye's main town). The journey from Glasgow takes approximately 6 hours with a change at Fort William.

Limited service - check schedules carefully

While possible with a very long day (10+ hours of driving), a day trip from Edinburgh to Skye is not recommended. The island deserves at least 2-3 days to explore properly. If you have limited time, consider:

  • 2-night stay: Drive up one day, full day on Skye, drive back
  • 3-4 nights: Ideal for exploring Skye's highlights
  • Alternative: An organised multi-day tour from Edinburgh
