Edinburgh Castle dominates the city skyline from its position atop Castle Rock, an extinct volcanic plug that has been a stronghold for over 3,000 years. As Scotland's most visited paid tourist attraction, the castle offers an unforgettable journey through Scottish history, from medieval warfare to the Scottish Crown Jewels.

The castle has witnessed some of Scotland's most dramatic moments. Mary Queen of Scots gave birth here to the future King James VI, who would unite the crowns of Scotland and England. The castle has been besieged more than 20 times throughout its history, making it one of the most attacked places in Britain.

Today, Edinburgh Castle houses the Honours of Scotland (the Scottish Crown Jewels), the Stone of Destiny, the famous One O'Clock Gun, and several museums including the National War Museum of Scotland. The views from the castle walls stretch across the entire city and beyond to the Firth of Forth and the hills of Fife.

History of Edinburgh Castle

Castle Rock has been occupied since at least the Iron Age, with evidence of human settlement dating back to around 900 BC. The first royal castle was built by King David I in the 12th century, though the oldest surviving building is the tiny St Margaret's Chapel, named after his mother, Queen Margaret.

Throughout the Wars of Scottish Independence, the castle changed hands between Scottish and English forces multiple times. The famous "Black Dinner" of 1440 saw the young Earl of Douglas murdered at a royal banquet here—an event that later inspired the "Red Wedding" in Game of Thrones.

The castle's military importance continued into the Jacobite risings of the 18th century. Bonnie Prince Charlie's forces besieged the castle during the 1745 uprising but failed to capture it. The castle remained an active military garrison until 1923 and still houses the regimental headquarters of the Royal Regiment of Scotland.
